SIGN launches free open online course: ‘Lights, camera, computer – action!’

Have you wondered how to launch your career in the screen industries but not known where to start? SIGN is launching a FREE course, open to all, which will help you take your first steps – and no qualifications are necessary.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore the impact of technology on digital storytelling, the new opportunities it presents, and the skills needed to start your career.

Designed by the University of York, academics from the Screen Industries Growth Network, and industry experts, our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will take place over three weeks. The course will take place in your own time and you can set your own pace as you work through the different sections, which includes looking at the use of AR and VR in film, TV and games.

During the course you’ll imagine the future of the screen industries and speculate on how emerging technologies could deliver engaging content, and tell new stories for years to come. This interactive course will offer you the chance to learn through videos, articles and quizzes. You’ll get the opportunity to build your own game and make your first short film.

Jude Brereton, lead educator for the course and Senior Lecturer in Audio and Music Technology said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this course free to all learners with an interest in screen media. Our learners will investigate digital technologies that are changing the way the screen industry works, and finding out how to kick start your career in the industry. We’ll also be considering what the future of the industry might be and how we can work together to make sure that it’s more inclusive of  diverse voices and new talent. This MOOC, which is open to everyone and which can be worked through in your own time, is one of the steps we are taking to build a more inclusive and diverse screen industry.”

SIGN is committed to offering free courses to learners who are keen to develop or progress their careers in the screen industries. We are keen to foster and encourage diverse voices and those from non-traditional backgrounds to gain entry to the screen industries of film, TV, games and related forms of media.

The course will be available from Monday, 24 January 2022, over the three weeks.
