Working in Sound: Beginners

Working in Sound: Beginners is a free, 8-week online course for women and people of marginalised genders in the Yorkshire and Humber region created by SIGN and Yorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN).
This course is particularly aimed at those people who are interested in working in the screen industries and who want to explore music technology and the moving image for the first time. We are particularly interested in supporting people who are new to the screen industries or are returning to work after a break.
Undertaking this course will give you the opportunity to develop new technical skills such as using a digital audio workstation (DAW) and video editing software. Each lesson will be delivered online through a series of live sessions covering technologies and techniques, alongside careers information and advice about working with sound in the screen industries.
Producer and engineer, Aiwan Obinyan, will lead the course. Aiwan has a close association with YSWN and experience of delivering education activities, including at higher education level.
Course content and dates
- Week 1 (Tuesday 8 March 2022): Group Introduction
- Week 2 (Tuesday 15 March 2022): Shooting a video on a low-to-no budget
- Week 3 (Tuesday 22 March 2022): Understanding DaVinci Resolve
- Week 4 (Tuesday 29 March 2022): Editing 101
- Week 5 (Tuesday 5 April 2022): Sound Design 101
- Week 6 (Tuesday 12 April 2022): Sound Design in Practice
- Week 7 (Tuesday 19 April 2022): Group session
- Week 8 (Tuesday 26 April 2022): Getting set for success in the creative industries
Each session will take place from 7pm – 8.30pm, online via Zoom.
Working in Sound: Beginners is a free course. No prior experience is necessary to join. For those with some previous experience of working with sound, take a look at Working in Sound: Experienced.
